ASXE take early advantage in Qualifying 1

ASXE’s Heat victory crucially closes the gap to championship leaders Rosberg X Racing (RXR) to five points on what is set to be a dramatic final day of the 2023 campaign in Chile.

RXR finished second in Heat 1 behind a resurgent NEOM McLaren XE, with Tanner Foust and Hedda Hosås claiming the team’s first Qualifying Heat win of Season 3. However, RXR currently lead the Continental Traction Challenge standings, which could prove vital in their pursuit of a second Extreme E title at the Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix.

Heat 1

It was a four-way battle for first off the start line, with NEOM McLaren XE’s Tanner Foust coming out in the lead ahead of No. 99 GMC HUMMER EV Chip Ganassi Racing’s RJ Anderson. Championship leaders RXR held back from the cars in front in the opening turns, as Johan Kristoffersson stayed out of any potentially race-ending incidents.

From there, though, the Swede began to carve his way up the order. Kristoffersson got ahead of JBXE’s Andreas Bakkerud to take fourth, and soon climbed into the top three positions after diving down the inside of X44 Vida Carbon Racing’s Fraser McConnell to take advantage of the Jamaican running off-line.

Foust continued to head the field as the drivers entered the Switch Zone, with Kristoffersson making a decisive overtake on Anderson to outbrake the American and snatch second ahead of the driver change.

The running order was unchanged after the switch, with NEOM McLaren XE’s Hedda Hosås deploying her ENOWA Hyperdrive immediately to defend from the chasing pack behind.

Soon, though, the Norwegian had RXR’s Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky all over the back of her NEOM McLaren XE ODYSSEY 21, with No. 99 GMC HUMMER EV Chip Ganassi Racing’s Amanda Sorensen keeping a watching brief in third.

Despite all of the pressure behind, Hosås continued to shine on her NEOM McLaren XE debut to fend off an eager Åhlin-Kottulinsky behind.

A strong defensive drive throughout her run ensured Hosås was able to retain the lead and take a first Qualifying Heat victory for NEOM McLaren XE, with RXR close behind in second.

Nico Rosberg’s outfit also took the lead of the Continental Traction Challenge to claim extra points, which could prove crucial in their bid to take this year’s Extreme E championship.

Heat 2

ASXE needed to get a flying start to maintain their championship challenge, and that is what they got as Mattias Ekström surged into first place off the start. Carl Cox Motorsport’s Timo Scheider took second after taking a wide line into the opening corner, with ABT CUPRA XE’s Adrian Tambay and Veloce Racing’s Kevin Hansen in third and fourth.

Hansen was immediately on the move, though, passing Tambay before setting his sights on Scheider for second.

An epic wheel-to-wheel battle ensued, with Hansen and Scheider trading bodywork as they battled for position.

The Veloce Racing driver eventually came out on top, diving down the inside of Scheider with a late move over the banking, with a bit of contact between them, to get ahead.

Carl Cox Motorsport’s Scheider fought back valiantly, attempting an aggressive move down the inside of Hansen into the next couple of corners, but could not make it stick. There was yet more contact between them as a result, with Scheider having to save a half-spin, but regained control of his ODYSSEY 21 to stay third.

ASXE Ekström’s kept the lead as they headed into the Switch Zone, with team-mate Laia Sanz tasked with fending off Veloce Racing’s Molly Taylor for the final two laps.

The Australian kept up the pressure in second, but Sanz maintained her cool to retain first place. With ASXE remaining ahead to cross the line in first and snatch a crucial point for winning Q1 Heat 2, Taylor dropped back into the clutches of Carl Cox Motorsport’s Lia Block, but the American was unable to get past.

ABT CUPRA XE’s Klara Andersson completed the order.
