Sardinia's iconic motorsport history

Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the rugged landscapes of Sardinia have not only captivated travellers with their beauty but also provided a thrilling backdrop for motorsport history that spans decades.

We shine the spotlight on Sardinia’s passion for motorsport and why it continues to leave an enduring mark on the global racing community.

Early days of rally racing: from Gentlemen Sardi to Rally di Sardegna

The roots of Sardinia's motorsport history trace back to the early 20th century. In 1922, the island hosted its first rallies, the Corsa Gentlemen Sardi from Cagliari to Suelli, and the Cagliari-Sassari-Cagliari rally. These early events marked the beginning of Sardinia's journey into the world of competitive motorsport.

In 1957, the Rally di Sardegna made its debut, cementing its place in the island's history. Over the years, this rally showcased the skill and determination of drivers and their teams as they navigated Sardinia's challenging landscapes. The Rally di Sardegna continued to captivate racing enthusiasts until its final edition in 1968, leaving a legacy that would later be carried forward by the Rally Italia Sardegna.

Rally Costa Smeralda: A showcase of excellence
The Rally Costa Smeralda, first introduced in 1978, holds a special place in Sardinia's motorsport history. This event was not only a testament to the island's rallying prowess but also an opportunity for manufacturers to showcase their cutting-edge rally cars. Lancia, in particular, used the Rally Costa Smeralda to unveil their iconic rally models, including the legendary S4 and 037.

Although the Rally Costa Smeralda ceased to run after 1992, its legacy was revived in 2018 with the introduction of the Costa Smeralda Rally. This reincarnation of the event, dedicated to historic rally cars, has found a new home within the Italian Championship, allowing enthusiasts to relive the glory of the past while celebrating the evolution of rallying.

Rally Italia Sardegna: A mainstay in the WRC Calendar
Since 2004, the Rally Italia Sardegna has been a significant fixture on the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar. The rally takes place across the scenic regions of Alghero, Olbia, and Costa Smeralda, showcasing Sardinia's diverse landscapes and challenging terrains. Known for its rough gravel stages and unpredictable weather, the Rally Italia Sardegna demands unparalleled driving skills from both drivers and co-drivers.

As the years passed, the Rallye dei Nuraghi evolved into what we know today as the Rally Italia Sardinia, a staple in the WRC calendar. The rally's rough gravel stages, combined with the unpredictable Mediterranean weather, demand not only blistering speed but also impeccable car control and strategic decision-making. Legends such as Colin McRae, Sébastien Loeb, and more recently, Sébastien Ogier and Ott Tanak have left an illustrious mark on Sardinia's motorsport history.
