Sport for purpose racing series Extreme E has been shortlisted for two awards at the British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS) Awards, in both the Sustainable Innovation and the Partnership of the Year categories.

Held at the iconic All England Lawn Tennis Club, home to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Extreme E’s double nominations at this year’s celebration of sustainability in sport reinforces the series’ sport-for-purpose credentials.

The Sustainable Innovation award highlights Extreme E’s green hydrogen partner, ENOWA, which has introduced green hydrogen power to Extreme E through using its ‘first of its kind’ Hydrogen Fuel Cell System. The series is transitioning from hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) powered generators, to ENOWA’s innovative portable hydrogen solution, and reached a key milestone at its most recent event in Scotland by powering 80 per cent of its race site with hydrogen fuel cells.

The Partnership of the Year award celebrates Extreme E’s partnership with Vodafone Business, its official Technology Communications Partner. The pair collaborate to integrate pioneering technologies into its environmental and community focused Legacy Programmes, which are mapped globally according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Ali Russell, Managing Director of Extreme E, said: “It is fantastic to be shortlisted in two categories at this year’s BASIS Awards, for both the Sustainable Innovation and Partnership of the Year categories.

“Sustainability and Innovation are key pillars of our sport-for-purpose racing series, and collaboration is the key to our success, so we feel very proud to see our partnerships with ENOWA and Vodafone Business being recognised so strongly within our industry.”

BASIS aims to harness the power of sport to build a sustainable future, empowering sport in the UK to become a world leader in sustainability with the urgency dictated by science, leveraging the significance of elite sport to guide society towards social and environmental sustainability.

The awards will take place on 26 September at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, home to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. At the 2023 edition of the awards Extreme E received the Strategic Leadership Award, while the championship’s Social Impact and Fan Engagement Strategist, Naganethra Reddy, also won the highly-coveted Rising Star Award.

As well as its two BASIS award nominations, Extreme E is also shortlisted for; the Sports Positive Awards, (Oct 8) in the Purpose Led Partnership category with Vodafone Business; the Leaders Sports Awards (14-17 Oct) for the Trailblazer category for Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag; the Sports Business Awards (Nov 29) in the Sports Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and also the Non Governing Body's & Rights Holders  Sustainability in Sport categories; and the edie Net-Zero Awards (Nov 29) for the Renewable Energy Project of the Year, with ENOWA.

NOTES TO EDITORS

About Extreme E:
Extreme E is a radical off-road racing series, founded by the same team behind Formula E, which showcases electric SUVs and futuristic technologies in some of the world’s most remote and challenging environments.

This five-event global voyage utilises its sporting platform for the purpose of promoting electrification, environment and equality. The series’ goal is to highlight the impact of climate change in some of the world’s most endangered environments, promote the adoption of electric vehicles to pave the way for a lower carbon future, and provide a world-first gender-equal motorsport platform.

The first sport to ever be built out of a social purpose, Extreme E aims to minimise environmental impact while maximising awareness, racing in places that have already been damaged or affected by climate change or human interference and taking fans deep into the heart of the most pressing issues facing our planet’s future.

Not only that, but Extreme E is also helping the car industry to develop future-facing technology using racing as a platform for road innovation, which accelerates change ten-fold.

In 2025, Extreme E will transition into Extreme H – the world’s first hydrogen off-road racing series – and will be recognised as an FIA Championship from 2025, as we continue to be a pioneer in motorsport.
